Delivering infrastructure on Pitt Island, one of New Zealand’s most remote inhabited islands, demanded considerably more than conventional project management.
Anthony Hellyer led the delivery of the Pitt Island Wharf project for Downer, managing the challenges of remote construction where labour, plant, materials, weather, shipping and access all had to align. When something was missing, there was no merchant around the corner and no easy second attempt.
Successful delivery relied on detailed planning, practical construction knowledge and, just as importantly, strong relationships with the local community, suppliers and project stakeholders. Problems were solved collaboratively and decisions were made with an understanding of what could actually be achieved in the environment.
The experience reinforced an approach Anthony continues to bring to Civil Solutions today: understand how the work will really be built, identify problems early, work with the people who know the job, and find practical solutions rather than simply administering the contract.
