Constructability in Practice
On a major infrastructure project, a 2.5 metre diameter watermain was required to cross an operational highway.
The proposed construction approach required three open-cut stages. Review of the methodology identified significant practical constraints and the potential for substantial additional cost and programme impact.
Through constructability review and optioneering, an alternative two-stage open-cut construction sequence was developed that allowed the crossing to be delivered while maintaining the required highway operations.
Removing the additional stage simplified the methodology and avoided significant additional project cost and programme impact.
This is where constructability adds value: understanding the physical problem, challenging the assumed solution and finding a better way to build it.
